Plants for monarchs

Starting in their overwintering grounds in Mexico, monarchs migrate north and arrive in the Cleveland area around late June. They lay their eggs on native milkweeds, which are the sole food source for monarch caterpillars. Adults, however, must feed on nectar plants that bloom throughout the summer and fall. In the fall, monarchs that summered in Canada take the long flight over Lake Erie and arrive, exhausted, on Ohio's shores. By growing plenty of fall-blooming nectar plants, you can help them recover and provide crucial support for the trip back to Mexico. The IUCN Red List recently declared the monarch butterfly endangered due to habitat loss and climate change. It is more important than ever that we do our part to save this once-abundant butterfly from extinction. (Photo by Beau Considine.)
