A very flashy sedge, Gray’s sedge displays pointy seedheads in late spring that resemble stylized sparkles of light. The plant’s charisma is especially useful in shade gardens, where limited sunlight often prevents a profusion of flowers in midsummer.

Primarily a plant of floodplains and pool margins, Gray’s sedge tends to grow under the forest canopy at an elevation of about 3’ above water level. In the home landscape, Gray’s sedge is quite versatile, growing under shade or sun and in wet to average soil moisture. Gray’s sedge is a good candidate for rain gardens because it can handle temporary flooding but does not require consistently moist soil. However, if Gray’s sedge is placed in an area of average moisture – especially in a sunny location – it will likely need to be watered during summer dry spells.

Gray’s sedge spreads by rhizome to form a patch of plants, and due to its fairly modest height, it can be used to fill in space among more showy wildflowers. In this role it serves as a counterpoint to the wildflowers’ colorful blooms, but with its distinctive seedheads, it contributes some flair of its own.

In terms of wildlife value, Gray’s sedge is a host to approximately 20 species of moth caterpillars, and its seeds are consumed by birds such as sparrows. Luckily for the gardener, though, the plant’s foliage is not a desirable food for white-tailed deer.
