Title: Nursery Technician
Full-time, seasonal (mid-March to end of October)
About us
Meadow City is a small but quickly growing nursery located in Cleveland, Ohio. We specialize in growing Northeast Ohio native plants for pollinator gardens and ecological restoration. Our team includes three co-owners and one seasonal employee (this position). Since building a retail location on a vacant lot in 2023, we have become the go-to destination for native plants within the city limits. We take pride in the quality of our plants and in the level of support we provide for gardeners creating habitat for birds, pollinators, and other wildlife.
Job Summary
We are looking for an efficient, self-motivated individual to help grow and care for our native plants. As nursery technician, you will work closely with Alyssa, our production manager, on day-to-day tasks like potting up plants, sowing seeds, watering, weeding, carting plants around the nursery, and shoveling potting soil. On busy days, you will be assisting customers at checkout, and in spring and fall, you will help with pop-up sales around Northeast Ohio.
Our ideal candidate works quickly and remains focused on nursery tasks which can sometimes be repetitive. Physical stamina and a positive attitude are also important. This job involves working outdoors every day in weather that can be cold, hot, or rainy, without a climate-controlled area. Experience caring for plants in a nursery setting is a plus.
The entire nursery is a small team of 4, so your role is essential, and you will be involved in all parts of the operation. You can expect a rewarding season of hard work, sowing seeds that grow and thrive, working with a tight-knit team, and helping the nicest customers support wildlife in their gardens.
Responsibilities
- Assist with day-to-day nursery tasks, including but not limited to potting up plants, sowing seeds, watering, weeding, carting plants around the nursery, and shoveling potting soil (~65%)
- Help customers at checkout and on the sales floor (~10%)
- Tidy around the nursery, pick up litter, and organize tools and supplies (~10%)
- Assist with pop-up sales around Northeast Ohio, including packing, setup, and takedown (~7%)
- Assist with DIY projects (~5%)
- Some garden maintenance and planting (~3%)
- Potentially work at the nursery alone, especially on watering plants
Qualifications
Important personal attributes:
- Able to work quickly and efficiently on repetitive tasks
- Self-motivated, stays on task without supervision
- Good at following directions, asks questions when needed, open to correction
- Helpful and friendly to customers
- Positive attitude
Other requirements:
- Able to lift 50 pounds, twist, stand, and squat throughout the workday
- Physically able to do repetitive tasks for long periods of time
- Able to work outdoors in hot and cold weather without access to a climate controlled space
- Due to the risk of spreading tobacco mosaic virus to our plants, we unfortunately cannot hire tobacco users (smoking, vaping, or smokeless). We are sorry for the personal nature of this requirement.
Skills (not required, but nice to have):
- Experience caring for plants, especially in a nursery setting
- Gardening experience, especially with perennials
- Knowledge of Ohio native plants - habitat preferences and/or behavior in a garden setting
- Plant identification skills
- Experience working outdoors in all weather
- Experience with customer service
Hours and wages
- $17-20/hr
- 40 hours/week, mid-March to end of October
- 5 days a week, from 10 AM to 6 PM (days of the week somewhat flexible)
- From May to mid-June and in September, your help will be needed on most Saturdays
